The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has implemented a 12-point campaign as part of an effort to join the national conversation about police reform.
The campaign is called “How We Serve: Defining the Culture of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office” and it comes in the wake of the May 25 death of George Floyd, in which four Minneapolis police officers were involved. Floyd’s killing, which is being prosecuted as a murder case, has led to nationwide protests and calls for reform, as well as rioting and unrest in some cities. Locally, the area has seen nearly a dozen peaceful protests.
The SCSO campaign topics are: Use of Force, Rightful Policing, Training, Diversity, Transparent Communication, Body-Worn Cameras, Comprehensive Reporting, Addressing Social Injustices, Shooting at Moving Vehicles, 21st Century Policing and Supervisor Accountability, and are accompanied by “Stronger Together,” a statement on the agency’s commitment to community engagement, according to a press release.
The campaign includes an infographic and webpage dedicated to sharing agency demographics, statistics on excessive force, and reasons behind policy decisions.

It notes that Sarasota County comprises 83% white residents, 9.3% Hispanic and 4.8% African-American, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The SCSO, meanwhile, is 86% white, 7% Hispanic and 5% Black.
“Leadership starts at the top and that is why we set expectations early on about the culture of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Col. Kurt Hoffman, Sheriff Tom Knight’s chief deputy. “Rightful policing is not just what we do, it is who we are. My message to law enforcement executives who employ a workforce that does not buy into a 2020 policing philosophy is to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.
“There is no longer room in this profession for officers who refuse to honor the oath they took when they pinned on their badge and agreed to serve all the citizens of their community.”
